Members of our team participated in hashtag#WaterMicro2025, one of the most important global events in water microbiology.

Dr. Ion Gutierrez-Aguirre presented an interesting poster, Monitoring highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in environmental waters at migratory bird gathering sites, covering a very important topic — pilot monitoring of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in environmental waters at migratory bird sites, aiming to establish an early warning system for outbreak prevention. Research was done in the frame of the EU financed project IAVSur-BME Influenza A Viruses Surveillance in Birds, Mammals, and Environment, coordinated by the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection.

Dr. Arijana Filipić, a researcher at the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology (NIB), delivered an engaging creative presentation, What are you waiting for? SuperPlasma is here!, where she talked about an innovative technology combining supercavitation and plasma (SuperPlasma) for effective virus inactivation in water. Additionally, she co-chaired the Disinfectant-Free Drinking Water session, which discussed various aspects of providing high-quality water without the use of chemical disinfectants.

Since water scarcity is one of the most pressing issues we face today, it is crucial to have effective technologies for monitoring water safety and providing efficient decontamination. This is why researchers at NIB are actively developing and applying advanced technologies to monitor and improve water quality.
